The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment (WCDPHE) was notified that an individual, who was recently identified as being positive for measles, shopped at the Windsor, Colorado, King Soopers store (1520 Main St.) on Friday, May 30, from 10:30 a.m. through 1:15 p.m. during their infectious period. The risk to others who were in the store during this period is relatively low, but if you have not been previously vaccinated for measles or are immunocompromised, we encourage you to reach out to our Communicable Disease Team at 970-400-2223 for a risk assessment.
All shoppers, regardless of vaccination or immune status, are encouraged to watch for symptoms over the next sixteen days, or until June 20. Symptoms typically start with cold-like symptoms, including fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A few days later, a distinctive red, blotchy rash appears, usually starting on the face and neck and spreading to the rest of the body. A person is considered infectious up to four days prior to the appearance of a rash. If you develop symptoms, it is recommended that you isolate and reach out to your primary care physician (PCP) or local urgent care for consideration of testing for measles. It is important to notify your PCP or urgent care that you have been exposed to measles so that staff can take precautions prior to arrival.
If you are unvaccinated or unsure of your vaccination status, the best way to protect yourself from future exposures is through vaccination. Your PCP or the WCDPHE Public Health Clinic can discuss options with you and provide vaccination. To schedule with the clinic, please call (970) 400-6420.
