Comprehensive Plan updates begin
Weld County, CO – Weld County is beginning the process of updating its Comprehensive Plan, the long-range policy document that guides how the county plans for growth, infrastructure, land use, and community development in unincorporated areas of the county.
The Comprehensive Plan helps ensure Weld County continues to grow in a way that supports residents, preserves the county’s character, and maintains a strong economy. The county population grew by over 30% between 2010 and 2020, making it the second fastest growing county in the state by percentage. With this level of growth, it is important to plan for the future and carefully consider where growth should occur and what it should look like.
‘This update gives us the opportunity to make sure our policies and priorities reflect the needs of today’s residents and the opportunities of tomorrow,’ said Kevin Ross, Commissioner Coordinator for the planning department. ‘We look forward to hearing from residents as we plan for the county’s future.’
Work on the update began this fall. The county’s planning department is currently meeting with focus groups, community stakeholders, and the planning commission to gather input on priorities and challenges facing Weld County today.
Broader public engagement opportunities will begin in January 2026, when residents will be invited to share their ideas and feedback through community meetings, online tools, and surveys.
‘Community input is critical to this process,’ said Planning Director David Eisenbraun. ‘Our goal is to ensure that every resident who wants to participate has a chance to share their perspective on how Weld County should grow.’
The Comprehensive Plan update is expected to take approximately 18 months, with adoption anticipated in 2027. Regular updates on the process will be shared on the county’s website and social media channels.

My Take
The comprehensive plan is forward thinking and what Weld County needs to continue disciplined, well-planned growth. I believe in this work and the benefits it brings our residents.
I believe in the vision of Planning Director David Eisenbraun and look forward to this process. I encourage residents to engage when public input opens in January 2026.
