County road 34 to reopen by end of week

Following a near 10-week closure, Weld County Road 34 between the east I-25 frontage road and WCR 13 is set to reopen by the end of the week.

During the closure, crews from Kraemer North America completed various aspects of drainage work in preparation for construction of a roundabout, anticipated to begin next spring. Completed work includes:

Construction of a new flood relief structure under WCR 34 just west of the new roundabout location. This new multi-opening concrete box culvert will allow North Creek floodwaters to pass underneath WCR 34, enabling the roadway to stay open during most flooding events.

The installation of new storm drainage pipes and inlets, which will be incorporated into the new roundabout. These new pipes and inlets will help get stormwater off the road surface and safely convey it into North Creek.

Removal of the existing arch-pipe that was conveying North Creek floodwater under WCR 34. This pipe was located in the middle of what will soon be the new roundabout at this intersection.

The majority of the earthwork for the new roundabout, including soil stabilization. This will make construction of the roundabout next year – and the associated closure of WCR 34 during construction – a quicker process overall.

Completing the tasks above required utilizing several different types of material, specifically:

  • 387 cubic yards of concrete for the concrete box culvert.
  • 93,500 pounds of rebar.
  • 730 linear feet of storm drainage pipe.
  • 2,423 cubic yards of structural backfill around the concrete box culvert.
