For her professionalism and dedication in leading the Weld County Regional Communications Center (WCRCC) and 911 dispatching efforts, Tina Powell has been named Director of the Year by NICE Public Safety. The recognition was made last Tuesday when NICE announced its “2024 PSAPs’ Finest Award” winners. Powell is one of nine recipients — eight individuals, one 911 center — to be recognized by the agency nationwide for excellence in emergency communications.
“We have an amazing team. I think we have the right people in the right places. I appreciate the recognition, but it’s more about my staff,” Powell said. “We’re doing good things, and this award means I’ve had an impact on our people and they trust me. That’s really the most important thing.”
Since 2011, Powell has served in many different capacities in the WCRCC. In 2016, she served as the WCRCC communications manager before becoming director of the WCRCC and Weld County Public Safety Communications in 2021. In her time as the director, she has overseen the implementation of CentralSquare in 2022, a new public safety software system which has brought many efficiencies to 911 dispatching. The 911 staff has been expanded to include a quality assurance team and training division, which has helped 911 dispatchers be as effective as possible.
This award is far from the first for the Weld County Department of Public Safety Communications. In 2020, the WCRCC was named the nation’s top public safety answering point by NICE. Most recently, the WCRCC was reaccredited by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch. Additionally, in the past three years, more than 70 Weld County dispatchers have received internal Lifesaver Awards for their efforts to save lives of those calling 911.
While Powell believes these accomplishments are solely due to the dispatchers, radio staff, quality assurance and leadership teams, Laurie Pfeiler, Deputy Director of Weld County Public Safety Communications, said Powell’s leadership is undeniable.
“She embodies fearlessness and tenacity,” Pfeiler said of Powell’s leadership. “She is a tireless advocate who consistently makes bold, courageous decisions in unwavering support of our mission.”
”No one expects to have to call 911, but when they do, it’s important we respond quickly and professionally,” said Kevin Ross, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “This award, and the many others received by the WCRCC, shows our continued commitment to excellence.”
