Intersection Improvements Coming Northwest of Hudson

Written by Team James

Weld County awarded $3.99M to improve the busy WCR 41 & Hwy 52 intersection—wider lanes, shoulders, and safer travel by October.

In late May, the Weld County Board of Commissioners awarded a $3.99 million contract to AB Underground LLC to construct improvements to the intersection of Weld County Road (WCR) 41 and Colorado Highway 52. The project is expected to begin no earlier than the week of July 7 and be complete by the end of October.

Work will center around widening the roadway north and south of WCR 41 to provide wider shoulders and left turn lanes in each direction at the intersection. Additionally, 600 feet of Colorado Highway 52 will be milled and repaved.

The improvements aim to make the heavily used intersection northwest of Hudson safer and more efficient by reducing the risk of broadside accidents. Approximately 15,000 vehicles use the intersection daily, according to the Weld County Department of Public Works.

While AB underground LLC will perform the construction, public works will serve as the project manager. The county is not alone in making a financial investment in the project. A federal grant in the amount of $953,445 will help offset the county’s cost. The design and the work itself will be completed so that the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) can replace the stop signs at the intersection with a traffic signal without the need for additional utility relocations, earthwork or paving. The traffic signal installation is separate from the county’s project and tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2026.

“This intersection sees a lot of use, and that’s only going to continue as the county grows,” Weld County Public Works Director Curtis Hall said. “This project is important for both safety and efficiency moving forward and shows how Weld County and CDOT can work collaboratively to improve safety and efficiency.”

“Maintaining our transportation system is always a high priority, but there is an expense to every project. Anytime we can receive a grant or support to offset a portion of that cost, we’re appreciative,” said Perry Buck, Weld County Commissioner Chair.

An exact start date for work at WCR 41 and Colorado Highway 52 is still being determined. Once finalized, the timing of any associated closures, will be announced on the county’s Facebook and X platforms. Closures throughout the project are expected to primarily impact the north and south legs of WCR 41, with the highway remaining open throughout, although certain portions of work impacting the highway will put it under varying forms of traffic control at different points in the project.
