Colorado Legislature The Bully Pulpit

House Bill 25-1189: Motor Vehicle Registration Reform & Fees

Written by Scott James

House Bill 25-1189 is a sneaky tax increase, raising vehicle registration fees and automatically increasing them every year. Enough is enough! If politicians want to take more of our money, they should ask voters—not force hidden taxes through the back door. Tell your legislators to VOTE NO on HB 25-1189!

House Bill 25-1189 is yet another money grab disguised as bureaucratic efficiency. This bill:

  • Raises vehicle registration and titling fees by $4—a hidden tax hike on every Coloradan who owns a car or truck.
  • Mandates automatic annual fee increases for inflation, ensuring permanent, never-ending increases.
  • Gives county clerks more power to charge shipping and handling fees, adding even more costs to Coloradans.
  • Changes vehicle salvage titling laws, adding new requirements for sellers and buyers.

What this bill doesn’t do is address why Colorado drivers should pay even more to the government while our roads continue to crumble.

My Thoughts on the Bill

Let’s call this what it is: a TAX increase on every Coloradan who drives a car. The politicians pushing this bill won’t call it a tax because they don’t want to ask voters for permission. Instead, they hide behind the word “fees” and hope no one notices. Well, we noticed.

Why HB 25-1189 Must Be Stopped

Backdoor Tax Hike – If the government forces you to pay more money to register your car, it’s a tax—no matter what they call it.

Automatic Fee Increases Forever – This bill removes accountability by tying fee increases to inflation, ensuring Coloradans pay more every year, forever.

No Promise to Fix Our Roads – Colorado already collects millions in vehicle fees. Where’s the money going? It’s certainly not going to fixing potholes.

Hurts Rural Colorado the Most – The people hit hardest by this tax hike? Farmers, ranchers, and working-class families who rely on their vehicles daily.

No More Hidden Taxes!

Colorado politicians must be honest with the people. If they want to raise taxes, ask the voters—don’t sneak it through as a “fee.”

📢 Tell your legislators to VOTE NO on HB 25-1189! Colorado taxpayers are NOT the state’s personal piggy bank.
