TWO ROAD PROJECTS MOVE FORWARD

Written by Team James

Two major Weld County roads will see closures in 2025 for long-overdue improvements, ensuring safer, stronger routes for drivers and trucks.

One road in northern Weld County and one in southern Weld County are set to be improved. Last week. the Weld County Board of Commissioners approved a near four-month closure for one project and hired an outside contractor to complete another.

West of Eaton, a road rebuild will take place on Weld County Road (WCR) 29 between WCR 74 and Colorado Highway 14. The road will be closed from March 10 until July 2, 2025. Detours can be viewed on the Weld County Road Advisory Map.

During the closure, the Weld County Department of Public Works will strengthen the road’s structure, rebuilding it using full-depth reclamation (FDR). FDR allows for the reuse of a portion of existing asphalt in rebuilding the road. The process has been used successfully in the past, one recent example being onWCR 77 between WCR 100 and WCR 106, a project completed last October. Crews will also replace culverts, one of the first steps in the entire project.

The end result of the project will be a freshly paved and striped driving surface and a road with wider shoulders, features that better accommodate the traveling public.

“This road rebuild will better equip WCR 29 to deal with current and future traffic demand, which includes heavy trucks and agricultural equipment, particularly during harvest season,” said Curtis Hall, Director for the Weld County Department of Public Works.

North of Lochbuie and east of Hudson, just over two miles of road on WCR 37 between WCR 8 and Colorado Highway 52 will receive new asphalt, beginning April 4, 2025. The need for new asphalt follows years of use, which has caused significant cracking to the existing driving surface, an ailment that can lead to potholes and further deterioration if not corrected. Approximately 2,000 vehicles travel the road daily, with 15% of that traffic attributed to heavy trucks, according to the Weld County Department of Public Works.

Coulson Excavating Company Inc. has been hired to complete the project for an amount not to exceed $1,792,229.25, with Public Works serving as the project manager. The project is anticipated to be complete by May 30 and utilize both lane closures and full closures. Detours are still being finalized.

“Both of these roads serve as key transportation routes in different areas of the county,” said Perry Buck, Weld County Commissioner Chair. “This maintenance is necessary keep them safe and efficient, and we look forward to the improvements.”
